4 political activists were arrested in Maharashtra after they assaulted Asha Mirje of the NCP for blaming the Delhi Gang Rape victim in her own rape. They declared that the Delhi Gang Rape and Mumbai Gang Rape were true National horrors and rapes that no one should excuse. “She could easily have commented on any other rapes which were ok. She could have excused the rape by our party workers last month. Now that girl had asked for it. This is a politica move and an assault on the dignity of innocent women.”
As political party defended the actions of their workers and feminists were torn between condemning Asha Mirje, the assault on her or both, help for the political activists languishing in jail came from unexpected quarters.
Asha Mirje herself excused her assaulters in a press conference saying that she had “invited” the assault by offending their sentiments.
“Did I really have go to publicly excuse a crime against a citizen acting in a perfectly legal manner? Take the Shakti Mills gang-rape case. What was wrong if the victim went to such an isolated spot at 6pm on work and with a colleague as escort?” a battered Mirje spoke outside the office of the NCP women’s wing in Nagpur. “I have to be careful. I have to ask myself, what am I doing, whom am I blaming, what am I excusing crimes for, do I really need to say such things,” she added.
She has requested the police to release the activists of an opposing political party for doing what came to them naturally in the face of such provocation by her.
The political party in question is forming a committee to decide whether they should send her a “Thank you” card or “Get well soon” card. “No victim had come to our rescue after a crime before this.” an accused told Fek Le. He is considering switching support to the NCP after this pardon claiming that the party reflects his violent ideology better. “I always felt that if women ask for it, then crimes against them should be allowed.”
The rival political party has accused NCP of poaching supporters by endorsing crime, but declined to comment on why their supporters were criminals to begin with.
